 | Any dog, cat or ferret that has bitten a
person:
 | shall be quarantined for a minimum of 10
days |
 | shall not be sold, transferred, or moved
from the county until the end of quarantine (as ordered by the local
health department) |
 | shall not be killed until quarantine is
completed, unless the animal presents a danger of injury to others
or the animal is diseased or injured

 | Any person is required to:
 | notify the local health department within 24
hours if they have knowledge that someone has been bitten by an
animal |
 | notify the local health department if a
biting dog was killed or died within the 10-day quarantine period
|
|
 | Local health departments are required to:
 | investigate reports of biting animals, and
order those animals to be quarantined or killed and tested if they
have bitten someone |
 | supervise the quarantine of biting animals |
 | order quarantined animals to be examined by
a veterinarian if signs or symptoms develop |
 | require that biting animals (applies to
dogs, cats, and ferrets) be current on rabies vaccination before
release from quarantine

|
 | Owners of biting animals are required to:
 | confine the biting animal in a manner and in
a time frame, as ordered by the local health department |
 | notify the local health department
immediately if the animal escapes confinement |
 | pay all costs if animal is ordered
quarantined in a pound or kennel |
 | pay costs of veterinary examination and
canine/feline rabies immunization,
as ordered by the local health department |
 | provide proof that the biting animal is
current on rabies immunization or have the animal immunized against
rabies prior to release from quarantine

 | Veterinarians are required to:
 | report animal bites |
 | report all examinations to local health
departments |
 | report to the local health department any
animal that exhibits symptoms of behavior suggestive of rabies and
to hold that animal until the rabies status of the animal is
determined
